Colin’s has many research  specialties related to China. The main 0nes are Chinese ethnic minorities, Chinese theatre, Chinese history and politics, Western images of China, and Australia-China bilateral relations.

In addition, Colin has published many edited books and over 100 scholarly articles in refereed journals and book chapters in scholarly books. Many of Mackerras’s writings have opened up a new field of research between Australia and China and has had a significant international impact.

In the last 50 years , Colin has taught in many universities across China, particularly Beijing Foreign Languages University since 1964. Since 2005, Colin has taught Master programs at Renmin University. Some of his past colleagues include Professor Stephen Fitzgerald, Professors Liu Chengpei, David and Isabel Crook, Zhang Yongxian, Chen Lin, Professor Wang Jiaxiang, Hu Wenzhong, Emeritus Professor Colin Brown, Emeritus Professor Nancy Viviani, Emeritus Professor Nick Knight, Emeritus Professor Martin Stuart-Fox,  the list is endless.

In August 2015, Colin was the finalist of the 9th Special Book Award of China making him the 50th person to have received such an honor for his work and contributions.
