Colin’s has many research  specialties related to China. The main 0nes are Chinese theatre, Chinese ethnic minorities, Chinese history and politics, Western images of China, and Australia-China bilateral relations.

In addition, Colin has published many edited books and over 100 scholarly articles in refereed journals and book chapters in scholarly books. Many of Mackerras’s writings have opened up a new field of research between Australia and China and have had a significant international impact.

In the last 50 years , Colin has taught in  universities across China, particularly Beijing Foreign Studies University since 1964. Since 2005, Colin has taught Master programs at Renmin University of China. Some of his past colleagues include Professor Stephen FitzGerald, Professors Liu Chengpei, David and Isabel Crook, Professor Zhang Yongxian, Professor Chen Lin, Professor Wang Jiaxiang, Professor Hu Wenzhong, Emeritus Professor Colin Brown, Emeritus Professor Nancy Viviani, Emeritus Professor Nick Knight, and Emeritus Professor Martin Stuart-Fox,  the list is endless.

In 2015 Colin Mackerras won a Special China Book Award中华图书特殊贡献奖, given by the State Administration of Press and Publications, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China 中华人民共和国新闻出版广点总局 to foreigners who have made outstanding contributions in spreading Chinese culture through their writings.

The award was given on 25 August 2015 in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing.
